That’s why we will conduct a visual examination, but also rely upon multi-dimensional x-rays, microscopes, and advanced diagnostic tools to look for the earliest signs of a problem. We also empower our patients by educating them about the signs and symptoms of oral cancer, and by encouraging regular self-examinations at home.

Depending upon the nature and extent of the pathological lesion, your treatment options may include:

  • A follow-up re-evaluation or observation appointment
  • A biopsy (There are a number of available biopsy methods.)
  • A laser removal procedure
  • The complete surgical removal of the lesion

The Importance of Routine Oral Cancer Screenings

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 49,750 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Among those patients, only 57 percent will still be alive in five years. These statistics have been largely unchanging over the past few decades.

Diagnosing oral cancer is not difficult. A screening is a simple and straightforward process that can typically be performed in about five minutes. So why do so many patients lose the battle? Deaths due to oral cancer typically occur because the cancer is discovered too late in its development. For this reason, it is imperative that you receive routine oral cancer screenings. A five-minute exam could quite literally save your life.

Oral Cancer Risk Factors

Statistically, most of the patients screened at our office will not have oral cancer. However, because diagnosis is so time-sensitive, it is important for patients to understand the risk factors associated with oral cancer. There are several elements that contribute to oral cancer risk, ranging from genetic to lifestyle. Some of the common risk factors include:

  • Age: Two-thirds of patients diagnosed with oral cancer are over the age of 55.
  • Gender: Men are twice as likely to develop oral cancer as women.
  • UV Rays: Patients who work outdoors for the majority of the time are more prone to developing oral cancer.
  • Heredity: Some genetic syndromes can contribute to oral cancer.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Approximately 70 percent of patients diagnosed with oral cancer consume alcohol daily.
  • Tobacco Use: 80 percent of patients with oral cancer use some form of tobacco.
  • HPV: Approximately 25 percent of patients diagnosed with oral cancer also have the human papillomavirus (HPV).
  • Immune System Suppression: Certain drugs taken to treat immune diseases could put patients at a higher risk for developing oral cancer.
