If you are missing all or most of your teeth, you no longer have to rely on an unstable removable denture. Today, oral surgeons and prosthodontists offer many highly realistic choices. Two common options are All-on-4® dental implants and snap-in dentures. But what is the difference between these two? And is one better than the other?

At Texas Oral Surgery Specialists in Colleyville, TX, we are proud to offer All-on-4, also known as SecureBite®. Before performing any treatment, Dr. Chris Tye will perform a thorough evaluation to explain all your prosthetic options and help you choose the right one for your needs.

What are All-on-4 dental implants?

Previously, patients would have needed one implant post for each tooth that was going to be replaced. Thanks to All-on-4 dental implants, patients can receive an entire upper or lower denture with much less impact on the jawbone

With All-on-4, Dr. Tye will place four smaller implant posts at an angle. Then your prosthetic will attach permanently to the exposed tops of the implant posts.

What are snap-in dentures?

For snap-in dentures, your surgeon will usually place between two and six implants. Then he or she will provide a removable denture that will snap on to the tops of the posts. This denture will be shaped like a traditional prosthetic with an acrylic plate across the top of an upper denture.

What are the advantages and considerations in choosing between fixed dental implant bridges and snap-on dentures?

When deciding between fixed dental implant bridges and snap-on dentures, it is important to consider several factors. Fixed dental implant bridges are often recommended when only a few teeth are missing, as they provide a permanent solution that is brushed just like natural teeth. On the other hand, snap-on dentures are more suitable for individuals missing most or all of their teeth, offering the advantage of being removable for cleaning.

In addition to the number of missing teeth, the ease of care is another crucial consideration. Snap-on dentures allow for easy removal for cleaning, which may be preferred by individuals accustomed to traditional dentures. Conversely, those seeking a permanent implant-supported restoration that mimics natural teeth may find fixed dental implant bridges to be a better fit.

Ultimately, the decision between fixed dental implant bridges and snap-on dentures should be made in consultation with a dental professional who can provide guidance based on individual needs and preferences.

When deciding between fixed dental implant bridges and snap-on dentures, patients should consider various factors based on their dental needs and preferences. If a patient has only a few missing teeth, a fixed dental implant bridge may be a suitable choice. On the other hand, snap-on dentures are more appropriate for patients who are missing most or all of their teeth.

In addition to the number of missing teeth, patients should also take into account the care involved. Snap-on dentures can be easily removed for cleaning, which may be preferred by some individuals. Conversely, those who desire a permanent restoration that mimics natural teeth and does not require removal may find fixed dental implant bridges to be a better option.

Ultimately, the decision between fixed dental implant bridges and snap-on dentures should be based on a patient’s unique dental needs, lifestyle preferences, and desired level of maintenance and care for their dental prosthetics.

Security and Comfort

Both All-on-4 dental implants and snap-in dentures are stabler and more comfortable than traditional prosthetics. Both will eliminate the uncomfortable chafing that often occurs with denture use.

Maintenance and Cleaning

To care for All-on-4 dentures, you will simply need to brush and floss, just like you do your natural teeth. You will also need to floss underneath the base of the prosthetic.

On the other hand, to clean snap-in dentures, you should take them off at night and soak them in a cleaning solution.

Appearance

Both types of dentures are more realistic than traditional removable ones. You won’t have to worry about denture adhesive, and the prosthetic will sit right against your gum line. Nonetheless, since snap-in dentures are removable, they may not have quite the same realistic effect as All-on-4 dental implants

Eating and Speaking

You won’t have to worry about embarrassing slippages with either type of implant-supported restoration. However the acrylic plate connected to a snap-in denture can affect your sense of taste. Plus, it can make it difficult to pronounce certain sounds.

Long-Term Oral Health

Like dental roots, implants help to prevent jawbone recession, providing regenerative signals to trigger new tissue growth. Therefore, both All-on-4 and snap-in dentures can prevent changing facial contours and a sunken appearance

Cost

The cost of an implant-supported restoration depends partially on the number of implants you are going to receive. Therefore, if you opt for a snap-in denture supported by only two posts, your total cost will be less. At the same time, you will not have the added stability and jawbone protection that more implant posts would provide.
