Dental implants are widely regarded as the ultimate tooth replacement option. Unlike other restorations, which only replace the crown of a tooth, dental implants actually replace the dental roots. Then a crown, bridge, or denture attaches permanently to the tops of the implant posts. Unfortunately, though implants are becoming much more common, there are still many myths and misunderstandings surrounding this treatment.

At Texas Oral Surgery Specialists, Dr. Chris Tye offers standard dental implants, as well as implant-supported bridges and All-on-4® dentures. He and his Colleyville, TX, team are also committed to patient education. They are always happy to answer your questions and clear up any misunderstandings that you may have.

Read on for some common myths about dental implants. Then contact us for more information or to schedule a consultation.

Myth #1: Implant Surgery Could Damage Your Jaw.

The truth: Implant surgery is extremely safe.

If an implant is set too deep or too close to a nerve, it could cause permanent damage. However, when you select a qualified practitioner, these complications are highly unlikely. Dr. Tye has degrees in both medicine and dentistry. He is widely regarded as one of the area’s best oral surgeons. So when you choose our practice, you know you are in good hands.

Myth #2: Only Senior Citizens Get Dental Implants.

The truth: Most adults over age 18 are candidates for implants.

It’s true that older patients are more likely to get dental implants. In fact, implant use among patients aged 55 to 64 increased 1000% from 2000 to 2016. But this is primarily because older patients are the ones more likely to have sustained tooth loss.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Are Cost Prohibitive.

The truth: Implants are a great long-term investment.

Implants do initially cost more than other dental restorations. But over the years, implants can save you a lot of money. Implants prevent jawbone recession. In turn, they can prevent further tooth loss and the need for additional restorative care. Moreover, dental implants can last a lifetime, so most patients only have to pay for them once.

Myth #4: Surgery Is Invasive and Recovery Lengthy.

The truth: Implant surgery is minimally invasive, and recovery only takes a few weeks.

Before placing dental implants, Dr. Tye will carefully plan the procedure. Using our advanced imaging technology, he will determine exactly how to position the posts for minimal impact to your jaw. During the procedure itself, you will receive IV sedation, so you will have little memory of the surgery. And, although it can take 3 to 6 months for the implants to integrate with your jaw, any initial inflammation or discomfort will usually subside within a few weeks.

Myth #5: Implants Are Difficult to Maintain.

The truth: You care for implants just like you care for your natural teeth.

Implant maintenance is simple. Brush and floss daily, and visit the dentist for cleanings and exams twice a year.
