At Texas Oral Surgery Specialists, we perform extractions nearly every day. While oral surgery is routine for us, we understand it’s not something our patients go through every day. Therefore, it is only natural that many individuals experience some degree of nervousness or anxiety about their procedure. Knowing what to expect after your Hurst dental extraction can significantly improve your healing process. Today, Dr. Chris Tye, your Hurst oral surgeon, will discuss a few tips and tricks for enjoying a comfortable recovery.
Preparation is Key
First of all, it is important to properly prepare for your oral surgery procedure. Think ahead to a few of the things you can do to make your surgery day as simple and stress-free as possible. For example, visit the pharmacy a day or two in advance and pick up your prescriptions. It is also a good idea to visit the grocery store and purchase soft, nutritious foods so you can stock your fridge and pantry ahead of time. Additionally, be sure you have arranged for any necessary child care, so you can relax during the first day or two.
Don’t forget about entertainment! Recovery can be an excellent time to binge watch your favorite TV series or finish reading that novel you’ve been working on. Before you head to our office for your Hurst dental extraction, gather all the music, books, and movies you may need. Be sure to lay out a pair of sweat pants and a comfy t-shirt, as well.
Managing Discomfort
Any time you undergo oral surgery, some discomfort can be expected. However, if guidelines are followed properly, most patients experience minimal pain and tenderness following their tooth removal. One of the best ways to keep discomfort at bay is to take over-the-counter pain relievers proactively. By keeping your system loaded with these medications, you can stay ahead of the pain. Dr. Tye will most likely prescribe other medications as well, such as antibiotics or pain tablets. Take these exactly as directed. Additionally, it is important to reduce your activity level during the first 48 hours, as exercise and heavy lifting can actually lead to increased bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. The best rule of thumb is to go home and take it easy. Try not to do too much too soon. Most patients are able to comfortably return to work in one to two days. However, if you have a physically demanding job, you may require a few more days off.
Managing Swelling and Bruising
Swelling and bruising is a normal aspect of healing after your Hurst dental extraction. These side effects typically peak approximately three days after your procedure. During the first 24 hours, you can reduce the effects of swelling by applying ice packs to the external jaw in 20-minute increments. You can also purchase bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory. Bruising may occur in some patients. If you experience bruising, arnica montana can help reduce these effects.
Overall, bruising and swelling should not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice that swelling increases after the fourth or fifth day, be sure to call and let us know, as it could indicate infection. If this occurs, Dr. Tye can prescribe an antibiotic to address the situation.
